LASCO Chin Foundation’s Response to the Impact of Hurricane Beryl

Ready to Make a Difference

  • Designated as the strongest and fastest Tropical Storm to swiftly matriculate into a Category 5 hurricane, Beryl has left devastating damages to infrastructure and lives in less than a week.
  • Beryl became the earliest Category 4 Hurricane recorded, breaking the record of Hurricane Dennis on July 8, 2005.
  • Beryl made landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane raging across the southern Caribbean islands, flattening hundreds of building and costing lives & livestock, leaving about $510 million worth of damage in the Caribbean.
  • Beryl caused between $28 to 32 billion in damage in the U.S. and also impacted Canada as far north as Nova Scotia. Many countries are still battling the economic repercussions.

Union Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines | Carriacou, Grenada

  • More than 90% of houses in Union Island were demolished and approximately 1,700 persons have been displaced.
  • Over 3,500 households affected and close to 10,000 person’s homes significantly damaged.

Beryl’s Impact on Jamaica

  • 250 roads affected by fallen trees and flooding.
  • limited access to clean water, proper sanitation and electricity.
  • over 160,000 people, including 37,000 children, require humanitarian assistance 
  • Livelihoods in south eastern Jamaica, especially in Clarendon and St. Elizabeth have been badly disrupted.
  • Estimated damage to agricultural sector is Ja$4.7 billion (approx. US$30million)
  • More than 80 hospitals significantly damaged or affected

ONE WEEK after Hurricane Beryl hit Jamaica, the LASCO Chin Foundation in collaboration with our partners, distributed 1,417 Relief Care Packages benefiting more than 4,000 people in 25 communities who were negatively impacted by the hurricane

Our Next Steps

Support for Women & Children

Recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate events on women and children, the LCF will partner with BlinkSky Foundation in providing 400 Relief Care Packages for single mothers who have been significantly impacted by the hurricane.

Distribution to the beneficiaries is expected to start during the week of July 22, 2024

Support for Community-Based Businesses(CBBs)

Micro and Small Community-based Businesses have been devastated by the Hurricane.

On July 12, after a preliminary assessment, representatives of the New Testament Church of God identified 68 shops across 21 communities in Clarendon and St Elizabeth that were negatively impacted by Hurricane Beryl

On July 13, the LCF prepared a Rapid Assessment Questionnaire that is currently being fielded by representatives of the New Testament Church of God to ascertain, inter alia, the extent and nature of damages to corner shops and cook shops that can provide food and other necessary items to members of the affected communities.

LCF Rapid Reconstruction & Recovery for Community-Based Businesses(CBBs)

CBB Rapid Reconstruction & Recovery Assistance

Using data from the Rapid Assessment Questionnaire, LASCO Chin Foundation, in collaboration with Partners aims to assist corner shops/small grocery stores and cook shops, mainly in the affected communities in Clarendon and St Elizabeth

Objective:

To expedite business recovery, safeguard jobs/livelihoods, and improve access to basis grocery supplies and cooked food in communities affected by Hurricane Beryl.

Assistance include:

  • Restoring cook shops
  • Repairs to shops (especially roof repairs)
  • Restocking basic supplies (especially water) to shops
  • Financial assistance & advice
  • Other assistance where required
